Studies of Argumentation

The Argumentation module makes the Master in Logic and Philosophy of Science the only Master in Spain and one of the few in the world offering an advanced training in general argumentation theory. This is a young, growing interdisciplinary field of research studying the practice of argumentation. To approach its subject, argumentation theory combines the methods and perspectives of linguistics, psychology, dialectics, logic, rhetoric and communication.

The Argumentation module offers a survey of the history and recent trends in general argumentation theory, and provides the concepts and techniques needed for argument analysis and evaluation. On this basis the student will be able to approach the study of the practice of argumentation in specific contexts (science, philosophy, law, politics, journalism, etc.) or to join the ongoing debates in argumentation theory (e.g., Which is the appropriate analysis of fallacies?  Are there visual arguments?)

Jonathan Cohen highlights the deep relationship of argumentation theory to philosophy when he defines philosophy as “the reasoned discussion of what can be a reason for what”.
